Annotation: The collection stood as the bible of writing assessment/evaluation for many years. The book established holistic, analytic, and primary-trait scoring as a kind of trinity of direct methods to measure or score essays. But the collection was more eclectic than this suggests, with contributions on measures to analyze text via computers, syntactic measures to deal with maturation, measures to capture intellectual growth, and self- and peer-evaluation.
