Annotation: This collection is based on talks, reaction papers, and discussions at a symposium in October, 1980 at Lancaster University. Many of the contributors to this ground-breaking volume discuss the usefulness and validity of "profiles" or "diagnostic profiles," in which a second-language student's writing proficiency is recorded as separate scores on various sub-skills, or on various language examinations, not as a global or holistic score. See especially J. Charles Alderson's chapter, "Report of the Discussion on general language proficiency," pp. 187-193. [A few years later, Liz Hamp-Lyons will help revise ELT exams along the lines of profile scoring.] RHH [Rich Haswell & Norbert Elliot, Holistic Scoring of Written Discourse to 1985, WPA-CompPile Research Bibliographies, No. 27]
Keywords: ESL, ELT exams, testing, validity, profile scoring, J. Charles Alderson, Liz Hamp-Lyons
