This edited collection emerged from a colloquium convened by the academic body of the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California. Held in 2008, the meeting brought together nine researchers/teachers from Mexico and the United States to explore educational challenges associated with reforms, innovations, policies, and changing contexts in higher education. The contributors to this collection are 14 researchers from Mexico and the United States, who collectively consider the inequality of opportunities in educational institutions and processes on both sides of the border.
The chapters in this collection advance the understanding of the challenges faced by diverse educational communities and contexts. Drawing on the concepts of discourse and identity, this work analyzes the problematic relationship between various educational actors immersed in contexts of change at the local, national and global levels. Empirical studies included in this book include cases reporting the identity negotiations of indigenous teachers; teachers from the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE); high school students; scientific researchers in Mexico; high-achieving minority students; and bilingual elementary students in Mexico and the United States. Two chapters that advance theoretical perspectives address the need for students to have the necessary knowledge to participate effectively in educational processes, as well as the need to create scenarios and opportunities for the equitable participation of all without distinction of social, economic, or ethnic background or identity. This book will be of particular interest to researchers, teachers, and those who are training in educational research.

About the Editors
Guadalupe López-Bonilla holds a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature from the University of California, San Diego. She is co-author of Lenguaje y Educación. Temas de Investigación Educativa (México: Fundación SM), and Una década de investigación educativa en conocimientos disciplinares en México (2001-2011). México: ANUIES/COMIE). Her most recent works include ”Becoming an author: Engaging high school students in disciplinary practices” (Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy), and “Los jóvenes en el cibercafé: Entre la literacidad tradicional y las nuevas literacidades”. She retired as Professor of Literacy and Discourse Studies from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California.
Carmen Perez Fragoso holds a Ph.D. in Communication from Stendhal University, Grenoble 3. She is a co-author of Propuestas metodólogicas para la evaluación de la educación en línea (México, Editorial UdG). Her latest publication is an article titled "El acceso a las TIC para el aprendizaje: la operación de los cibercafés y su ubicación geográfica" pubished in Revista Interamericana de Educación de Adultos. She retired as Professor of Distance Education from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California.
