Detailed Description: Communications Across the Professions Committee A WID/AC subcommittee

Mission Statement: The demands of today's workplace are rigorous and diverse. Criteria for successful performance extends beyond specialization to knowledge and skill sets that include a strong emphasis on professional communication, speaking and writing. It is the belief of the Community College of Baltimore County's Communications Across the Professions committee (CAP) that there is a direct correlation between an employee's ability to communicate and write effectively, and that employee's professional career development and success, no matter what that career is. Through internships, specialized general education writing and communication courses germane to career-oriented disciplines, seminars and workshops, certificates of writing and communication competence, and exposure to writing and communication professionals, the committee is dedicated to producing a highly competent pool of student writers and communicators whose skills become reputable and highly appealing to potential employers. To achieve this goal, the cross-disciplinary committee will work with faculty across STEM, allied health, business, communication, and vocational disciplines.

The goals of the Communication Across the Professions Professions committee are to develop and deliver: • STEM-focused English 101 and 102 courses for students dedicated to pursuing careers in STEM; • English 101 and 102 courses with content for nursing students; • Resume-writing workshops/portfolio maintenance for students in STEM, allied health, business, mass communication, and vocational disciplines; • A certificate in professional writing to accompany relevant CCBC AA degree, certificate, and transfer options; • Internship programs for student writers working toward a certificate in professional writing; • Writing in the professions seminars and workshops for students modeled after CCBC's creative writing seminar; • A writing in the professions publication of student writings modeled after Fine Print, CCBC's creative writing publication; and • Faculty forums for sharing information and discussing issues of curriculum and content management.
