Before questioning writing's capacity (if any) to build alternative
societies or "senses of self," wouldn't it be a good idea to "pin down" or
name approximately what we are building an alternative to? The imperial
self? The imperial patriarchal self? Capitalism? How would you describe the
"official system" we all write within (and from which, as your post
suggests, there is no escape)? This might seem a bit like Foucault 101, but
I don't think we can assume that everyone understands "the official system"
in the same way.
