I think Houston Wood is indeed raising one of the key issues/problems in
not only defining writers but "writing" itself as both a verb and as an
artifact. While you are raising some good rhetorical questions, you end
your post with this question that I sense is more geniune:

Personally, I think it's because it's a lot easier to think about nut and
bolt issues of grammar and rules (and thus easier to have a position on
one way or the other) and because it's a heck of a lot more comforting
than contemplating the schizophrenic self/fractured identity.
