The Talmudic Roots of Hypertext

David Porush

There is a good old model of collaborative editing that is about 1800 years old - it's called The Talmud - and its pages are already hypertextual, and collaboratively written as well. I think it's worth your time to look at how a group of people with intellectual interests spread over time and space negotiated a means for expressing and capturing the collaborative enterprise of establishing an organic, open-ended textual tradition and also managed to edit into coherence a collective, ever-changing vision.
