Ron Irwin's reminder about how we are required to grad and sort our writing
students reminds me of a point that Peter Elbow makes in his workshops
these days: That writing is only graded in schools. Most other writing is
simply read, without responses of any kind. Some writing may help people
get a job, or be promoted, but little writing is every "evaluated" except
by school teachers, who keep on doing it and doing it while claiming that
they need to, to help students prepare for a "real world of writing,"
where, in fact, their writing will never be given a grade at all.
