Fred writes about "one's visceral reaction to what writing really is."
May I suggest that these deep reactions are formed by the discourses and
experiences that "one" has. So will then we be left with dueling viscera?

Maybe it is best to start not with analysis of what "really is" but
rather with visions of what we want our communities to be. Then we no
longer have to defend one or another analysis as true, but only discuss
the means (including analyses) that will be most useful in leading us there.

I would ask: Is this model of writing useful in taking us "there"? Or is
this one more useful? We might disagree about that, but would not have
to disagree about what writing or other nouns "really" are.
