`PAPER LandSCAPES': MAPS, TEXTS,
and THE CONSTRUCTION OF SPACE, 1500-1700

An interdisciplinary conference to be held at Queen Mary and
Westfield College, July 19, 1997

CALL FOR PAPERS

`Mapping' has become a key term in current research on the early
modern period, reflecting a growing awareness of the importance
of spatial concepts in cultural analysis. The aim of this conference
is to examine the function of maps and mapping within the broader
contexts of contemporary constructions of space.

Papers are invited on any aspect relating to the textual and cultural
mapping of space in the 16th and 17th centuries. Topics might
include land surveying and cartography, space and gender, the
varieties of geographical writing, representations of the land, the
history and theory of space, ideologies of place, surveillance and
visibility, the `mapping' of people, private and public space, literary
landscapes, mathematical and geometrical thought, etc.

Proposals are welcome from anyone interested in the topic, from
established academics to research students. Please send abstracts
of no more than 300 words, by 15 January 1997, to either:
