The connections between musical drill/improvisation, "creative writing,"
and composition instruction brought up by Mike and Becky are fascinating!

One of the great ironies of formalism in poetry (especially some of what
gets called the "New Formalism") is that many poets believe fixed,
demanding formal patterns actually open the door to real discovery. Those
interested might want to check out the intorduction to _Strong Measures_ by
Philip Dacey and David Jauss, Harper & Row 1986.
