Michael,
The kind of epistolary communication you suggest seems to be growing,
especially in elementary schools where children are conducting research in
part by communicating with adults via email. In one case, students (fifth
graders) research a state in a variety of ways including finding an email
penpal who lives in the state and who can provide first hand knowledge on
the state. I think we need to consider seriously how we might use email as a
tool for teaching writing at all levels. I like your thoughts on this.
