Actually the movement now is not away from grades but towards
standardizing grades, at least insome quarters--check out the American
Federation of Teachers home page http://www.aft.org/ for their links on
grading. Naturally enough, and they argue for this as well, that calls
for a standardized curriculum. So it's no wonder Al Shankar slammed the
NCTE's Language Arts Standards.
There is a frenzy for measurement. The best hope is in places which are
using alternative methods and where students--all students--are going on
to do well without the usual measurement. But it's hard to imagine
someone making it through K-Grad School without running into some
tentacle of the testing squid.
