I saw this message and I thought it was pretty scary, too. Clearly, there
is room for reform in the way tenure works, but gutting it seems a bit too
extreme. I mean, I understand and partly agree with the needs of
university systems to operate a bit more efficently (and more flexibility
with tenure could certainly help), but simply tossing it is dangerous not
only for higher education in Minnesota, but elsewhere.

Frankly, I think this is a reason why schools that haven't unionized
faculty members already ought to re-think that decision. SOSC has a
faculty union and while I haven't fully reviewed the agreements between the
faculty and the "management" yet, I do know that issues of tenure are
discussed in some detail. I don't know if the union will be able to hold
the line on tenure forever, but it sure as heck can't hurt.
