No dodgeball. No futball. No baseball, basketball, or volleyball. I was a clumsy child and the eldest child, with no one to throw to for a long time.
Then, my first grade teacher put me off the ball thing even more. She had this crazy notion that in order to learn to count, one had to bounce a ball for each count. Well, I COULD count but couldn't bounce the ball - or at least not successfully more than a few times in a row. The old fool would report that I wasn't doing well with my counting!
Thus a ball, a symbol of physical prowess, came between me and acknowledgement of my intellectual prowess.
