Case Studies and other Simulations

Presenter: Pat O'Rourke, Illinois State University

Description: Management decision simulators are tools that may be used to train/educate individuals in the skills of management. Participants in this workshop will learn to use an agribusiness management simulation [dynamic case] that is Web-enabled and may be used in an asynchronous distance education mode in teaching agribusiness management courses/topics. The ProStar+ simulation creates an effective medium for learning more about the complexity of managing a business such as a retail farm supply dealership. In addition to learning about the simulation, participants will learn about how it functions within the classroom.

Participants will receive pre-workshop access information and assignments for the new simulation (ProStar). They will play this simulation during the workshop to help understand the issues one may encounter with this type of experiential learning approach.

Participants will leave with 1) an appreciation for the cost and benefits of using simulations, especially Web-enabled ones, 2) a better understanding of related benefits and issues from the student's point of view and 3) access information to the newest agribusiness management simulation available for instruction.

Participants should bring their financial calculators and inquiring minds to this exciting day of learning and virtual competition. For more details or answers to questions about the workshop, email Dr. Patrick D. O'Rourke at
