The Writing Fellows Program celebrates its Sixteenth year in 1998. Established in 1982, the program integrates the study of writing into courses throughout Brown University. The director of the Writing Fellows Program rigorously trains selected undergraduates to be peer tutors in writing; these peer tutors, or Writing Fellows, then work with students in disciplines across the curriculum.
Underlying the program’s interactive, collaborative, peer tutoring approach is the stubborn belief that writing is, ultimately, a communicative process that is best accomplished in active dialogue with other people. Through written comments and one-on-one conferences, Writing Fellows encourage other students to conceptualize writing as a dynamic process and demonstrate that clarity in written communication is valued by all readers in all disciplines.
The Writing Fellows Program serves from 45 to 50 courses a year, reaching approximately 3,000 undergraduates (60% of the student population in any given year). It has served as a national model for many other institutions, including, most recently: The University of Delaware, Dartmouth College, Swarthmore College, Western Washington, and Brigham Young University.
